'Act local, think global’ has long been a guiding principle in the environmental
movement. This, is why as part of the Green Tariff, we set up the Green Fund in
2001 to promote the development and installation of renewable energy technology
in local communities.
Since then, the fund has awarded grants of nearly £3.2 million and helped
around 188 projects to generate energy from the sun, wind, water or other sustainable
sources. Here are just a couple of examples of how we have helped people discover
the power of the sun:
Ringmer Community College
Ringmer Community College in East Sussex are definitely getting their sums right.
Thanks to the installation of 25 metre solar panels on the roof, they expect to
save money on their energy costs. The panels, which received an important contribution
from EDF Energy’s Green Fund, convert UV light into electricity, generating
up to seven kilowatts an hour. And even when everyone is on holiday, the panels
continue to produce green energy which is transferred back into the National Grid.
Amberley Ridge School
Amberley Ridge School, Gloucestershire is diving into renewable energy thanks to
a grant from the EDF Energy Green Fund for solar panels to heat its outdoor swimming
pool.
And that’s not all. Here are some of the other projects the Green Fund has
helped to support:
Kentish Town City Farm
Sandford Biomass (Carbon 60)
Hoathly Hill Community
Goblin Coombe Environment Centre
Upton Cross School
Cranford Community College
