We’re committed to reducing our carbon emissions and combating climate change.
In addition to encouraging you to reduce your carbon emissions, we’ve given
ourselves some pretty challenging targets too. Our Climate Commitments include aiming
to reduce the intensity of CO2 emissions from our electricity production
by 60% by 2020, compared to 2006 levels. The scale of our commitment goes far beyond
anything our industry has seen to date.
One of the most effective ways that we can cut our carbon emissions is to produce
a larger amount of our electricity from renewable or low carbon sources. This change
cannot happen overnight, but we are passionate
about meeting our targets.
We are planning to invest in our power stations to make them more efficient and
to build new power stations which have much lower carbon dioxide emissions. And,
in addition to our existing renewable investments, we intend to invest in around
1,000MW of renewable energy production, which is enough to power 500,000 homes.
What we’re doing already
Our
Green Fund alone has awarded nearly £3.2 million to more than 188
projects around the UK – like the Mendip Mill Micro Hydro, where up to 10
mill sites were provided with hydro generation equipment for the production of flour.
It also helped St. Mary’s School in West Sussex discover the power of wind
by funding a wind turbine unit linked into the school’s power supplies.
